Editor’s Note TFEM Spring 2025 : Efemérides

EDITORS NOTE SPRING 2025

Last week I had lunch with my two former students, husband and wife Jaume and Nuria. We always see each other once or twice a year for lunch or dinner. Nuria was needling Jaume about his impending 80th birthday bash. “That’s going to be a huge celebration!,” I chimed in, picturing a grand affair with speeches, good food and endless supply of wine.

Jaume gave us both a rather withering look, the sort that suggests “you’ve just suggested I wear socks with sandals.” “On the contrary,” he declared, “no surprises for me. No big celebration with hundreds of people. I want an intimate dinner with you (to Nuria), our son, his wife and our grandkids.”

Before Nuria could get a word in edgeways, Jaume launched into a proper explanation. “In my opinion,” he said, tapping his fork for emphasis, “I hate being the centre of attention. I am, in some way, obliging the guests of their presence. Some of them are just even feigning happiness for being there. A bit artificial, wouldn’t you say?” He was quite worked up. Nuria tried to reason with him.

“But Jaume,” she protested, “you only turn 80 once, and a lot of your friends want to be there with you on your special day.”

Jaume simply gave her a dismissive wave of his hand, a gesture that clearly said, “Don’t be ridiculous,” and returned to his lamb chops. He was quite determined, you see. A brief, slightly awkward silence fell over the table.

I glanced at Nuria, and she gave me a rather conniving wink. Was she plotting a surprise party, going completely against Jaume’s wishes? Or was she merely biding her time, confident she could sway him round to her way of thinking? I thought to myself, Jaume may come off as grumpy but it is his birthday. He can celebrate it however he wants, big or small.
